Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Alternatives to Living at Home

If Living In Your Own Home Ever Becomes Ill-advised – What Are the Alternatives?

There are both advantages and disadvantages to aging in one’s own home versus moving into a retirement community.  There are also advantages and disadvantages to each type of retirement community based upon individual preference and need (physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, social and financial).

The basic alternatives to living in your own home are:

  • Independent living
  • Assisted living
  • Board & Care
  • CCRC (continuing care retirement communities)
  • Memory Care
  • Skilled nursing (nursing home)

There are major financial distinctions related to these choices, which include monthly payments, possible upfront buy-in costs, and potential consequences if you ever choose to move out of the community.  Additionally, there are different regulatory agencies and laws governing these different forms of retirement housing.

How do you decide which type of retirement community best fits your individual needs?   Even the difference between communities of the same type can be enormous both in terms of quality and cost.  Is a more expensive community necessarily superior to one that is less expensive?  Where does one find ratings and reviews?  So, how does one make an informed choice for oneself or their loved one?  Can a placement agency or agent help with these difficult choices and how do you choose an agency or agent?

About the Speaker:

Locating the best residential solutions for seniors who can no longer safely live in their own homes is Alan Morgenstern’s primary field of expertise.  In addition to being a Gerontologist, Mr. Morgenstern is a California certified assisted living administrator.

Mr. Morgenstern’s interest in issues related to aging dates back to 1980 when he entered nursing school, worked as a home health aide and began volunteering as a hospice volunteer.   Many years later, when his elderly mother could no longer safely live alone, she moved across country to Oakland to live with Mr. Morgenstern and his wife Ariella, a palliative care nurse with Kaiser and formerly a hospice nurse.

Even with years of experience related to older adults, Alan and Ariella became acutely aware of the difficulties of finding appropriate services for Mrs. Morgenstern.  It was during this time, at the age of 58 that Mr. Morgenstern decided to return to graduate school enabling him to be of greater service to the aging & often vulnerable population of which he is approaching membership. Mr. Morgenstern is a graduate of San Francisco State’s Master of Gerontology (the study of aging) program.
