As befits our first meeting of the new year, we will survey various global issues, and consider which of them we should discuss in future meetings. For background, participants are asked to download a free copy of the 2018 World Report by Human Rights Watch:
https://www.hrw.org/sites/default/files/world_report_download/201801world_report_web.pdf
(Or, send me an email at the above email address, and I will forward it to you.) Participants should read beforehand the introductory chapter: “The Pushback Against the Populist Challenge” (pp. 1-13). The bulk of this Report consists of entries about individual countries. Participants are NOT asked to read all of these entries in advance (the Report is about 650 pages in length). Instead, participants should browse among entries that interest them most, with the goal of finding global issues to discuss in future meetings.
