Ashby Village Oscar Documentary Nominees? You Saw Them Here First!

by Rochelle Lefkowitz

This past summer’s popular Arts and Culture (A&C) speaker Betty Reid Soskin has recovered from a stroke and is now back at work at the Rosie the Riveter Museum! Thanks to AV Board member Jan Corazza for this great news from an East Bay Times/Bay Area News Group story by Jon Kawamoto a few weeks ago.

For the video of Betty Reid Soskin’s talk with a packed house for our June 2019 AV Arts & Culture Series First 10th Anniversary event click here. A documentary about Betty Reid Soskin, No Time to Waste, will be shown on Sunday, February 2, 2020 at the Rafael Theater in San Rafael and on Saturday, February 22,2020 at the Presidio in San Francisco.

The prior summer’s A&C star speaker, Saru Jayaraman (A&C 7/22/18), stars in another upcoming, must-see documentary. Waging Change, by award winning filmmaker Abby Ginzberg, is about the Restaurant Opportunities Centers (ROC), and the national fight Saru is spearheading for One Fair Wage. Get your tickets for the Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 1PM showing at San Francisco’s Castro Theater.

And as we go to press, another new important documentary reveals just what got us Prop 13 back in 1978

One focus of Elder Action - an interest group of Ashby Village - is Prop 13. An upcoming ballot measure could at long last amend Prop 13 to pull in over $11 billion new corporate property tax dollars every year for our state’s public schools—and roads, hospitals, libraries, etc.

How did we get here, starving our state budget to serve big corporate property owners?  That’s the focus of First Angry Man. The film is being screened by Janis Plotkin, Program Director of The Berkeley Film Foundation, at the New Parkway Cinema in Oakland on Tuesday February 4, 2020 (where there’s food along with this food for thought). If an AV group attends, and we let it be known, Janis promises to mention Ashby Village in her remarks!
