How the Magic Really Happens
at Ashby Village Events

Story by Tricia Sullivan,
AV Office Corps Volunteer

Everybody loves Ashby Village Events: the parties, the presentations, the activities. Here are two behind the scene volunteers who make Events happen: SIGRID DUESBERG and SUE DIEHL.  Their work is complementary: Sigrid plans events and Sue gets the information out to everyone.

Both Sigrid and Sue bring a strong background to Ashby Village. Sigrid, the Events Team Coordinator, was the operations manager for a private laboratory in Vienna (Austria) for ten years. In this capacity, she organized, among other things, international scientific conferences. After moving to the Bay Area in 1994, she started a catering company that focused on luncheons and small parties. Her experience in both the hospitality field and management has certainly led to her success with Ashby Village.  Sue, who creates and edits the Ashby Village calendar, brings an extensive background in technology to Ashby Village. Sue says, “I’ve been using computers since I took a BASIC programming class at Foothill Community College in 1979. After that all my jobs had computer use, including the last one before I retired in 2007.”

Sigrid started as a volunteer with Ashby Village in May 2017. She was ready for a change, and AV seemed like a good organization. “I had always wanted to work with older adults,” she says. “At first, I wanted to work one-on-one with members, but I did not have the training yet. Before attending a training session, I was asked if I had computer skills. That’s when I began working in the office as Events Coordinator.”

At that time there were fewer events than now. Along with Manuela Pegoraro (the former Community Engagement Manager), Sigrid, who is also on the Arts & Culture Team, helped restructure the Events Team by increasing the types of events, including outreach to the community.  New events now include pre-social hour talks, annual open house days, and taking part in Solano Stroll and Rockridge Out and About. “I quickly wanted her on my Volunteer Appreciation Party Team when I noticed her amazing vision and capacity for details … she helps to bring an element of class to every event!”, Pat Carvalho the Operations Director says. For Sigrid, working at Ashby Village helps to alleviate her sadness at not being able to help her 92-year-old father in Germany. She wishes her Dad had access to a similar organization.

Sue joined Ashby Village in 2010. Two years later, she took the training class and soon began doing data entry in the office once a week. When AV started using Salesforce, Sue’s job eased up. As she says, “with less complicated software, others were doing what I had done, and I was asked to take care of the AV Calendar.”  Now, when people notify Sue of an event, she converts it into a calendar item, making tweaks as needed. “I’m so appreciative of Sue’s dedication, she also tutored AV’s nature walk leaders to post their own events on the website. This empowered others to help lessen the load, I really enjoyed seeing that.” Pat says.

In these days of shelter-in-place, she has had to remove many of AV’s usual events and add various Zoom events. Sometimes Sue also enters registration and attendance of events. She reminds us that signing up ahead of time allows event sponsors to know how many people to expect.  Sue adds, “I can do my job from home, which is handy. At this point I see myself continuing to do this job for AV for the foreseeable future.”   A testimony of Sue’s work comes from Audre Newman, co-leader of Ashby Village Nature Walks. "Sue has been a friend, mentor, “we-can-do-this” person for years. She puts together the calendar, answers questions, and solves problems lickety-split.  I am so grateful for her! What a treasure she is for all of us!"

I think we can all agree with Sigrid when she says, “Ashby Village members have much to offer to us all.” It brings her hope when she meets people who are growing older but still having fun in life.

Thank you Sigrid and Sue!
