The First World War reshaped the world for the worse in every conceivable way, leading directly to the rise of Nazism, the Holocaust, and a new world war. However, we pay far less attention to its consequences inside the United States. American entry into the conflict in April 1917 provided an excuse for an all-out war on the labor movement, press censorship on a scale we've never seen before or since, and for the formation of an officially sanctioned vigilante movement with more than a quarter-million members.
Adam Hochschild writes frequently about human rights issues. His latest book, Rebel Cinderella: From Rags to Riches to Radical—the Epic Journey of Rose Pastor Stokes, was published in March 2020. His Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire’s Slaves was a finalist for the National Book Award and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the PEN USA Literary Award. He teaches at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism.
