Aging and the Inner Life

Late adulthood has the potential to be THE most meaningful and transformative period of one's life. The key is the development of the inner life, and with it a shift in one's relation to the aging experience. In today’s presentation, Sandi Peters discusses the work of leading developmental theorists to illustrate some of the central tasks inherent in the aging process.

Drawing from her recent book, Aging with Agency, she will recount three different elder fairy tales, and demonstrate how each embodies some of the essential tasks older people face as they grow into psychologically mature elders. Although not covered in today’s presentation, Sandi’s book also shares time-tested contemplative practices such as meditation, active imagination, dream work, and creative writing designed to engage one's inner worlds, and offers practical advice on issues such as assisted living, home care, and a different perspective on matters of memory and cognitive change.

Sandi Peters has a master’s degree in psychology and has been working in the field of gerontology since 1986. Her area of specialty is life span development and the possibilities for renewal in older age. Her recently published book Aging with Agency: Building Resilience, Confronting Challenges, Negotiating Eldercare, distills the psychology of C. G. Jung, Abraham, Maslow, the Eriksons and Lars Tornstam for their contributions to robust aging.  Sandi has particular interest in the role of symbolic expression in older age, especially for those with memory loss. She is an avid swimmer (especially in open water), teaches swimming to adults, and is a longtime meditator and seeker. She lives in Berkeley, California, and can be reached at sandi4eldercare@gmail.com.
