Monthly Film Discussion Series

A Feature Film Discussion of... Quartet
(1 hour, 38 mins., 2012, available on Netflix)

Please join us for our film discussion on July 15th of a delightful British comedy film, Quartet, directed by Dustin Hoffman. The film stars Dame Maggie Smith. You will need to see the film first on your own and then we will all get together via Zoom to discuss our reactions. Similar to a book club, our monthly discussions are dynamic, as we share our opinions and insights.

Quartet tells the story about how a home for retired musicians -- planning a concert to celebrate composer Verdi’s birthday -- is disrupted by the arrival of Jean (Dame Maggie Smith), an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents.

Her ex-husband still stings from her long-ago infidelity. And Jean is reluctant to join them in a performance of “Rigoletto,” as she knows she is long past her prime and is reluctant to sully the memory of her once-lovely voice. Can the passage of time heal old wounds? And will the famous quartet be able to patch up their differences in time for their gala concert?

As one reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes says, “A delightful cocktail of friendship and the acceptance of the frailties, both in yourself and in others.”
