Stop eating your children's lunch:
A case for animal-free foods


Presenter: Daniel Westcott, PhD Plant Biology - Head of Protein and Texture at Climax Foods


When any animal eats, 80-90% of those calories are used up simply keeping the animal alive. Only 10-20% of the food goes to growth. So, when we feed livestock animals, we waste 80-90% of the food that we give them simply keeping them alive. Why not simply eat the food directly instead of passing it through the middle-man of animal agriculture? In a world with increasing population pressure and a changing climate, we can no longer afford the middle man of animal agriculture. Luckily, new solutions are in the works that promise to maintain our cultural connection with food while reducing the climate impacts that are inherent in our current agricultural system.

 

Daniel Westcott is an educator and plant biologist by training, an activist by necessity, and an artist at heart. He earned his doctorate at Berkeley in plant biology after a long and winding path that wove together music, literature, agriculture, and food. In an effort to make a meaningful impact on the food system, he has been working to connect the dots between molecular biology, plant science, and food for the past two years at Climax Foods.
