Conversation with Nancy Rubin
on the Documentary "Hi, I'm Nancy Rubin"

Look Who’s On TV!

“Hi, I’m Nancy Rubin” is a highly-acclaimed documentary about our
member and long-time volunteer photographer. Join Nancy to discuss this
heartwarming and powerful story of one teacher’s success.

We suggest you watch this 40-minute documentary before the program. It
is available to stream on HBO Max, Discovery+, and the Magnolia Network.
For those who are unable to see it earlier, the film will be screened at 1:00 pm at the Ashby Village headquarters prior to the discussion.

You’re invited into the classroom and behind the scenes in the making of
this documentary about Berkeley High teacher Nancy Rubin and her
acclaimed “Time Capsule Project”, in which 15,000 students wrote a letter
to their future self.

The program will include two former students, one of whom directed the
documentary, award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Steinman Sternin,
and a powerful outtake from the show will be screened.

After the documentary’s premiere last year, one critic called it an
“Outstanding documentary for anyone who knows a teenager, has been a
teenager, or has heard the term teenager and wonders what it means. Also
for anyone who cares about education, social issues, or our ability to
connect as humans. …It’s a paean to great teachers everywhere.”

Nancy Rubin, who is a member of the Exploring Creativity Group, is an
accomplished photographer, a published author (Ask Me If I Care 1994),
and a veteran of 30+ years in the classroom. She has been featured in
LIFE magazine, CALIFORNIA magazine, and has been a guest on the
TODAY show.

Her current exhibit - FOREVER FIT: Exercising For Life - is on display at
the North Berkeley Senior Center and will be permanently installed in April
at the LifeLong Health Center in Richmond, with text in English and
Spanish.
