ELDER ACTION is an organization for people 50 years old and older, being launched to educate and advocate locally, statewide and nationally on issues of concern to elders. ELDER ACTION is a coalition of Ashby Village members and independent activists. 

Amidst an impasse in Congress over health care, California is leading once again with legislation to establish a single-payer statewide healthcare system. Elder Action is presenting this Community Forum to answer questions about this system: 
- What would a state-wide single payer system look like? Would it be affordable? 
- What would it mean for those of us who have Medicare and/or other forms of insurance? Are there provisions for long-term and community-based care? 
- How does a California single payer system compare with Sen. Sanders ‘Medicare for All’ proposal? Is one preferable over the other?   

The Forum will feature:

Judy Spelman, who served as principal health consultant to State Senator Sheila Kuehl, authoring two universal healthcare, single-payer bills that were passed by the legislature and vetoed by the Governor. She was co-chair of the California Nurses Association Bay Area Negotiating Council and the founding President of Health Care for All-California, which advocates for a single payer health system. 

Marty Lynch is CEO of LifeLong Medical Care and director of the Over 60 Health Center. LifeLong serves uninsured and Medi-Cal populations as well as the disabled elderly, frequent users of emergency rooms, and the homeless. Lynch co-founded the Elderly Sub-Committee of the National Association of Community Health Centers and is a past Chair of the California Primary Care Association.   

Eric Leenson is co-chair of Businesses for a Healthy California, representing businesses as a member of Campaign for a Healthy California, a coalition working for single payer in California.  He was co-founder of Progressive Asset Management, the first full-service brokerage to specialize in socially responsible investment.   Please join us. Together, American elders are a sleeping giant. The Older Women’s League and the Gray Panthers built great movements and made enormous gains for elders and all Americans in the last 50 years, gains we take for granted today.

We hope to contribute to building a movement that continues their important work.
