The Global Issues Group of Ashby Village plans to meet monthly on the last Wednesday of the month at 3:00-4:45 p.m. in the Ashby Village Office.

During this third meeting, we will discuss the global issue of refugees.
According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR): “A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries.” For the sake of concreteness, we will discuss particularly the refugee crisis originating in Burma (a.k.a. Myanmar).

We are hoping that participants will read a relevant statement by Human Rights Watch beforehand. It may be accessed by means of its title: Q&A: Road to Justice for Grave Crimes in Burma. Or it may be accessed by means of:

Global issues chosen for future meetings will be guided by the interests of participants.
