If you, your friends and family eat out, you’ll want to attend the next Ashby Village Arts & Culture Series event! Saru Jayaraman, founding president of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC United) and Director of UC Berkeley’s Food Labor Research Center, will share with us the big challenges the folks who cook and serve our food face, from America’s lowest legal wages ($2.13/hr. in 42 states since 1991) to the highest sexual harassment rate in any U.S. industry.

Fortunately, ROC United is making great strides, thanks to the growing number of restaurant owners, workers and diners all working together through ROC to secure OneFairWage. ROC’s recent big win?  Sending hundreds of thousands of signatures to the Labor Department to stop a new regulation to give restaurant owners the right to keep all their employees’ tips!

An electrifying speaker, Saru Jayaraman, a Yale Law School and Harvard Kennedy School of Government grad, is author of two books, Behind the Kitchen Door (2013) and Forked: A New Standard for American Dining (2016).

She’s done everything from be Amy Poehler’s date to this year’s “MeToo” Golden Globes to getting Berkeley legend Alice Waters to join hundreds of high road restaurateurs to leave the National Restaurant Association (“The Other NRA”) for ROC’s RAISE, and criss-crossing the country to help pass OneFairWage ballot measures in cities from Detroit to DC.

To learn what’s happening in Berkeley and beyond, and what diners like you are doing about it, don’t miss this event.

Suggested $10 donation for guests who are not members or (Ashby Village) volunteers
