Where: Meet at the Perch Coffee House, 440 Grand Ave, Oakland, NW corner of Bellevue
Open to: Members, volunteers, guests
Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible
The Lake Merritt bird walk will be an easy one—short and level—and we should see lots of birds and ducks. The lake should be teeming at this time.
Expect to see a wide variety of winter ducks. And additional species including various kinds of gulls, grebes, swallows, terns, herons, egrets, geese, and maybe hummingbirds.
Bring binoculars if you have them. I will also bring a spotting scope so that you will get excellent looks at some of these birds.
Options: Afterwards, those interested may walk along the lake to the Lake Merritt Gardens, to explore these and/or have lunch there.
Equipment or special clothing: Bring binoculars if you have them. Dress warmly.
Parking: Limited street parking on Grand and on Perkins or Staten. Paid parking on Bellevue (enter at the Fairyland entrance and drive to near the end of Bellevue, at Perkins, Ellita, or Staten, for parking.)
Carpooling: Write to the Nature Walks email forum at walks@ashbyvillage.info for carpooling.
Transit: The #12 bus (from downtown Oakland or from Albany/North Berkeley) stops at Grand and Staten, one block from the Perch coffee shop at Grand and Bellevue. The # 57 bus stops at the Grand Lake theater on MacArthur and Grand, a 6 block walk to our meeting place.
