Walk in the Redwoods - Sequoia Bayview Trail and Big Trees Trail - challenging option
Description: The Sequoia Bayview Trail is a well maintained out and back trail with some elevation. For the easier option we usually walk a leisurely hour out and an hour back. There are tree roots on some portions of the trail. In the past we have found the trail slippery if there is moisture dripping from the trees. For all these reasons, hiking poles are recommended. There are no restrooms at the trailhead or along this trail.
We have had requests for more challenge in our nature hikes. If we have walk leaders available, some may prefer the Big Trees Trail with elevation changes with some up and downhills as it passes the horse arena, and meets up with the Bayview trail. There are restrooms on this trail, but it is a longer option - 3 miles and a full 2 hours. Poles are strongly recommended for this option.
Depending upon walk leaders availability, we will discuss options before we set out. We encourage walkers to choose wisely based on your limitations.
Where to meet: We will meet at Sequoia Bayview Trail Trailhead on Skyline Boulevard approximately 1/2 mile from Joaquin Miller Blvd. 10800 Skyline Blvd. Oakland is a close navigation setting, but if your setting will accept Sequoia Bayview Trail Trailhead - use that. Allow time to park on the road. See the map link above.
What to bring: Dress for variable weather conditions. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and hiking poles. Poles can be helpful for balance and to maneuver on any uneven or slippery segments on the trails and are especially needed for Big Trees option. Bring your cell phone, if you have one! Hopefully we will have reception!
Directions:From Rockridge BART, get on Hwy 24 going East. Take the Hwy 13 exit going south. Take the Joaquin Miller exit and turn Left on Joaquin Miller Road. Turn left at the junction with Skyline Drive (Left arrow at traffic light). After about a half mile see the Sequoia Bayview Trail Trailhead on the left. Park along the road on the left side.
Coming the other direction on Hwy 13, take Redwood Road, then left on Skyline and stay RIGHT to stay on Skyline - then proceed around a couple sharp turns to find Sequoia Bayview Trailhead on one’s left.
Transportation: Need a ride? Members can request a ride from Ashby Village for a volunteer driver who can join us. You may know someone from your neighborhood group, with whom you might carpool. Or, have a family member or other guest bring you, and join you on the walk. Members can also see who is registered for the walk (you must be logged into the website) and may find a ride that way, or through a posting on the new AV bulletin Board.
