Sibley volcanic regional Preserve
View the Mazzariello Labyrinth
2 mi -Out and Back- With options
Description: While there are several trails in the preserve, this hike is advertised as easy, so should be good for many skill levels. Enjoy this 1.9-mile out-and-back trail near Orinda, California. This trail begins from the Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve parking lot. From here, you'll head along the Skyline Trail, then turn onto the Round Top Loop Trail and go up to view the Mazzariello Labyrinth before returning on the same route. (To reach the labyrinth requires a steep uphill and downhill extension - a challenge for some but not all!). It's best to wear hiking boots for this one, especially after rain, as the first half can become quite muddy. It is paved with some elevation and some shade, and the loop is under 2 miles.
If we have enough walk leaders, some may choose alternative trails for more challenge, including continuing along the Round Top Loop back to the parking lot. We'll discuss options before we strike out! Please be prompt to meet at 10 AM.
The visitor center at the Skyline Boulevard entrance is unstaffed and offers brochures for self-guided tours. It also features depictions of the region's volcanic geology.
Where to meet: Sibley Staging Area 6800 Skyline Blvd. Oakland. Meet at the visitor display near the parking lot.
What to bring: Binoculars if you have them, good hiking shoes for the trails, layered clothing for variable weather, water, windbreaker, hat, snacks. Hiking poles are optional, but a good idea for inclines and declines and general balance and are strongly recommended. Bring your cell phones if you have one!
Directions: From Hwy 13 take Park Ave exit in Oakland, turn left onto Park, then left onto Mountain Blvd for two short blocks, then right onto Snake. Follow Snake up to Skyline Blvd - 6800. In order to stay on Snake (and not end up on Shepherd Canyon) you'll need to make a left turn at just a short distance up Snake, about two blocks. Meet at the Visitor Display near the parking lot.
Transportation: Members can request a volunteer ride from the Ashby Village office- 510-204-9200 who can also join us. You may know someone from your neighborhood group, with whom you might carpool. Or, have a family member or other guest bring you, and join you on the walk. Members can also see who is registered for the walk (you must be logged into the website) and may find a ride that way, or through a posting on the new AV bulletin Board forum.
