About this event
NATURE WALK, JOAQUIN MILLER PARK: EASY, WITH MORE CHALLENGING OPTION
RSVP : Email Audre or phone 510-548-0530
WHEN: Saturday, August 10, 2019 10:30am - 12:30pm
WHERE: Sequoia Bayview/ Chaparral Trails, Joaquin Miller Park, Oakland
WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE: NO.
Open to members, volunteers and guests of members and volunteers.
Description: Consider inviting a friend who wants to enjoy the health benefits of exposure to Nature. Try this lovely dirt trail that winds through redwood, fir, bay, and eucalyptus forests on the west-facing slope of the Oakland hills. Some rocks and roots but well maintained. There is little elevation change (pretty flat) on the 2+ mile stretch. However, there are options for more energetic walkers: the Chaparral trail drops several hundred feet to the valley floor, then runs parallel to the Sequoia Bayview Trail, and then joins the Palos Colorados Trail which makes a loop with the Sequoia Bayview to return. Heavy rain cancels.
For possible carpools, several days ahead, please email our Nature walks forum stating your location and contact information. Or, email Audre, audrenew@gmail.com. I will try to find rides for those who do not have forum info.
How To Get There:
From Rockridge BART, get on Hwy 24 going East
Take the Hwy 13 exit going south
Take the Joaquin Miller exit and turn Left on Joaquin Miller Road
Turn left at the junction with Skyline Drive (Left arrow at traffic light)
Pass the entrance to Roberts Regional Park. After about 1/4 mile see the Big Trees Trailhead on the left. It is a wide dirt parking area just off the road. Audre will be standing there to greet you. If you go as far as the Chabot Science Center, you have gone too far, you should turn around and go about 200 yds. back.
For Public Transportation: see 511.org to Chabot Space Center. Add a few minutes to walk from Chabot to our trailhead.
Equipment or special clothing:
Wear sturdy walking shoes and dress in layers, bring walking poles if you use them, water, sun screen, a hat, rain or wind protection as weather dictates.
