NATURE WALK: TILDEN REGIONAL PARK, Quarry
Trail to Big Springs, returning via
the Lower Big Springs Trail, an easy trail
(a bit rocky and uneven in places)
Description : The Quarry Trail is a lovely, gentle path that traverses the lower hillsides below and to the west of the Tilden Ridge. Grasses, chaparral shrubs, pines, and bay trees dot the sunny (weather permitting) hillsides. We will take Quarry Trail to Big Springs Trail, returning via the Lower Big Sprint Trail. An easy trail, but a bit rocky and uneven in places. Depending on our group a more challenging option makes a loop via the Big Springs Trail to the Bayview Trail.
Where to meet: The parking lot for the Quarry Picnic Area at 780 Wildcat Canyon Road, about one mile east of the junction of South Park Drive (closed during newt season) and Wildcat Canyon Road, past the Brazil Building and the Tilden Botanic Garden.
What to bring: Dress warmly for variable weather conditions. Bring water, snacks, and hiking poles if you normally use them on hikes. Poles can be helpful for balance and to maneuver on any uneven segments on the trails. Poles can also help you step over puddles if it's been rainy.
Directions: From Grizzly Peak Blvd at Centennial, continue east on what becomes Golf Course Road, then turn right onto Shasta Road. Turn Right on Wildcat Canyon Road and continue to the parking lot for the Quarry Picnic Area on the South side of Wildcat Canyon Road, just west and south of Inspiration point. From Grizzly Peak Blvd at Shasta Road or Spruce, proceed to Wildcat Canyon Road and continue to the parking lot for the Quarry Picnic Area on the South side of Wildcat Canyon Road, about one mile east of the junction of South Park Drive (closed during newt season) and Wildcat Canyon Road, past the Brazil Building and the Tilden Botanic Garden.
